Question 1

How are words counted?

Accepted Answer

With Unicode-aware segmentation (Intl.Segmenter): hyphenated words and contractions like “don't” count as one word each. Other counters use different rules, so small differences are normal.

Question 2

What about Chinese, Japanese, or Korean text?

Accepted Answer

CJK languages have no spaces, so word counts are approximate there — rely on the character count instead. The page tells you when it detects CJK text.

Question 3

My essay says 1000 words elsewhere but 980 here. Which is right?

Accepted Answer

Both, by their own rules — Word, Docs, and this page split edge cases (hyphens, slashes, numbers) differently. For hard limits, keep a ~2% safety margin.

Question 4

Is my text sent anywhere?

Accepted Answer

No. Counting, conversion, and cleanup all run locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged.
